MARS Trial Update – Surgery a success?The MARS trial is the first randomised trial to address the role of radical surgery such as extrapleural pneumonectomy or EPP when treating those who suffer with incurable asbestos related mesothelioma.
EPP is a surgical procedure which involves the removal of part of the lining of the lung (the pleura), part of the pericardium (the lining of the heart) and part of the diaphragm as well as the section of diseased lung itself.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer which, in most cases, can be attributed to previous exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma has a grim prognosis, although some patients live for a number of years, most patients sadly die within eighteen months of diagnosis.
Although more prevalent in areas with a maritime or industrial background, mesothelioma is found nationwide in the UK, however, there are no mandated national guidelines for treatment and due to the rare nature of the disease, clinicians may only see a very small number of patients each year.

Primary or direct exposure to asbestos in the workplace has long been recognised as a dangerous health hazard. Indeed, it is estimated that over 2,000 deaths a years can be connected to the asbestos related cancer known as mesothelioma.
However, it is not always the case that victims of mesothelioma came into contact with asbestos from an occupational source. Each year Macmillan Cancer Support holds Cancertalk Week. This year it is running from 15th to 22nd February. The campaign is to try and get people talking about cancer and with two million people in the UK currently living with a cancer diagnosis, most of us are affected by cancer and need to be able to talk about it.

Friday, 4th February 2011 is World Cancer Day.
The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and its partner organisations are running campaigns worldwide with a view to raising cancer awareness.
Around the world, over 12.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year and 7.6 million people die due to the disease. Unfortunately, these figures are expected to increase each year. However, around 30 to 40% of cancers can be prevented.

A recent study published in America may bring the possibility of finding a cure for asbestos related malignant mesothelioma a step closer.
Dr Haining Yang and Dr Michele Carbone are the leading authorities for the study which was carried out at the University of Hawaii and they believe to have identified the causes of the incurable, asbestos related cancer and how to treat and prevent the disease.

Friday, 2nd July 2010 was Action Mesothelioma Day. This is an annual event supported by the British Lung Foundation to raise awareness of the deadly asbestos cancer, mesothelioma, which continues to rise in incidence.
Members of our Industrial Disease Department organised an event in Chester City Centre to help raise awareness of asbestos in the home to assist in making the public more asbestos aware.

On Sunday, 13th June 2010, Oliver and Co Solicitors took part in the Chester Dragon Boat Festival.
Participation in the event was arranged by the Industrial Disease Department who specialise in dealing with asbestos disease claims, including claims for pleural thickening, asbestosis and mesothelioma. The department works in conjunction with Macmillan Cancer Support, raising money throughout the year from events and donations from costs.
