Macmillan Fundraising on the River Dee

On Sunday, 13th June 2010, Oliver and Co Solicitors took part in the Chester Dragon Boat Festival.

Participation in the event was arranged by the Industrial Disease Department who specialise in dealing with asbestos disease claims, including claims for pleural thickening, asbestosis and mesothelioma. The department works in conjunction with Macmillan Cancer Support, raising money throughout the year from events and donations from costs.

The team

A crew of 20 employees, friends and family were given the challenge of raising at least £50 in sponsorship, giving a team target of at least £1,000 to be raised for our chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Macmillan Cancer Support is a charity close to Oliver & Co Solicitors, particularly the Industrial Disease Department who deal with claims for asbestos related illnesses, including asbestos lung cancer and a rare asbestos cancer, mesothelioma. Macmillan Cancer Support provides support, care and advice to many of our clients and their families and we wanted to give something back to this worthy cause.

There were 29 teams taking part, all with their own chosen charity. Each team competed in 3 races throughout the day and the fastest 6 times would then go head to head in the final.

Full speed ahead during the race

We completed our first race in 1.18.68; we made a significant improvement for the second race with a time of 1.04.80 and by the final race the weather had taken a turn for the worse and this reflected in our time of 1.16.10.

Unfortunately we didn’t make it to the final, we finished a respectable 16th, but everyone had a fantastic time. More importantly, we smashed our sponsorship target, raising over £1,700 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Finishing the race.

We did it!

A generous legal firm has promised to donate £1,000 to charity for every specialist case they settle in court.

Solicitors Oliver and Co, based in Watergate Street, Chester, will give a four figure cheque to Macmillan Cancer Support and British Lung Foundation for each case won involving the dangerous substance asbestos.

The legal firm has agreed to donate the funds to the charity of their choice after recovering millions of pounds in damages in recent years.

Partners Craig Howell said: "We work closely with both charities because they provide great support in all aspects of care to our clients who find themselves facing the most difficult time.

"We see how hard they work and want to give something back to these worthy causes."

Clients who suffer from Asbestosis and asbestos-related lung cancer have often developed the illness after coming into contact with asbestos in their place of work.

Oliver and Co recently settled a case for a man who was exposed to asbestos while working in the industry in the South East more than 30 years ago.

Solicitor Helena Jones said: "He was helped by his Macmillan nurse when he was first diagnosed with mesothelioma and she referred him to our firm.

"From that day on, we worked closely with her to ensure that he got the full support he needed in terms of treatment, applying for state benefits and specialist legal advice he required  which led to a successful award of compensation to him.

"Both charities are fantastic causes and we want to support them in every way possible".
