A plumbing firm, Superior Plumbing Installations Limited, has been fined following work on a refurbishment project in Aberystwyth.
A routine inspection by the Health and Safety Executive found that contractors were carrying out work when no provisions had been made for the possibility of asbestos being present. Although a survey had been carried out and had listed cement board, under the category of ‘presumed to contain asbestos’, workers had removed 82 metres of the boards, using a hammer and then disposed of the debris in a general waste skip.
The firm failed to deal with the work safely and it was found that the site manager site had not undergone asbestos awareness training. The firm pleaded guilty to a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and were fined £5,000 and ordered to pay costs.
