The Damages (Asbestos-Related Conditions) Bill had its second reading in the House of Lords on 5th February 2010.
This involved an extensive discussion on asbestos related health conditions and the issue of asbestos disease compensation. The Committee Stage consideration of the Bill is schedule for 5th March. The Bill has already passed through the House of Commons.
The Scottish equivalent has already received Royal Assent. A Judicial Review brought by insurers to stop the decision on pleural plaques cases being reversed by Parliament was dismissed in January. This now means that the House of Lords decision preventing people from claiming compensation for pleural plaques is now invalidated.
It is now hoped that the same stance will be taken in England and Wales so that the right to claim compensation for pleural plaques sufferers is reinstated.
